Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010It’s not particularly common knowledge, but a script isn’t written and finished until the subtext has been added by the actors performing it. Subtext is there to allow actors to not only put their own mark of creativity on a script, but to allow for real human emotions to be entered into the script. It would be extremely difficult for an actor at acting school to perform for something or someone who has allowed them absolutely no input on the finished product, and chances are, the actors then won’t put their heart and soul into the performance. A performance needs to be realistic, natural, you need to completely immerse yourself in the very essence of that character, and this is difficult if you’re reading from something completely made up by someone else, as only you know the emotions and feelings you can put into a character.
Consult with the script-writer regularly as to ways you think the script can be improved or how you could add a line or two to really convey to the audience what this character is feeling. Remember, only you know how you can portray realistic thoughts and feelings, and the script writer more than likely doesn’t know how to word things for you to act to your full advantage, so don’t be scared to talk with the writer regularly and let them know what you think or feel about the script – After all, they might have written it, but it’s you who has to act it.
